Saw this series of books recommended by Lane Library employees on the Lane Libraries (Oxford/Hamilton, Ohio) website a couple of years ago. Since then, Victoria Thompson has been my "go-to" author if I need a comfortable evening escape from the stress in my life. Is there nothing sweeter than going to bed with a paperback mystery? This series of books, which is really a historical mystery series, has just the right touch of romance/sexual tension between Sarah Brandt, the mid-wife and Frank Molloy, the police detective. 19C New York City provides the setting and the culture for the stories. Thompson always gives me a cultural/historical nugget about the different classes of people/immigrants and the buildings in their neighborhoods, that I end up surfing the Internet late into the night to find out more about life in 19th C NYC. *SPOILER* *SPOILER* *SPOILER* My favorite bit of dialogue has got to be this excerpt from page 281, after Malloy finds Sarah struggling with the murderer. "Malloy ran a hand over his face. 'How does this keep happening?' 'What?' 'Nothing.'"I had just been thinking "gee this scene feels familiar." I laughed out loud. I guess I can forgive Thompson for Malloy's annoying ambivalence about Sarah's involvement in his investigations.
What do You think about Murder On Sisters' Row (2011)?
These are cheesy mystery novels but I love them. Good bedtime reading plus a little NYC history.
