Murder On The Potomac (1995) - Plot & Excerpts

"Dallas" in DCIf you're a fan of murder mysteries, this could well be entertaining. Having worked in DC for over a decade, it was very interesting for me to see all the local landmarks and hangouts - but from a very different perspective. The perspective is very slightly left of center, and is very much from an elite strata of society, not at all the mundane view of average or even moderately upper level Washingtonians. It could very well appeal to those who loved to watch Dallas. The plot was slow to develop, and convoluted, but eventually came together (somewhat predictably - because the book was coming to a close) right toward the end. In great "Thin Man" tradition, after the murder(s) were solved, the protagonist and his witty, intelligent and beautiful wife went on a Paris getaway, and enjoyed entrecote (yeah, had to look that one up too) and petit fours as they wittily wrapped up the sub-plots.

A mystery that my mom lent me - one of those books that if I could, would rate it 2.5 - it was a fast read, lots of characters who could have done it regarding the "who dun it" but because it was book 12 out of 20+ in a series, I felt like the author thought you should already know some of the main characters feelings - my fault, not her though (if you read a series, you don't want to get bogged down each time being reintroduced to the main characters).I did like the placement though - takes place in the D.C./Georgetown area and I actually recognized some of the locations in the book. I think I would definitely read something else by the author, but not a mystery.

What do You think about Murder On The Potomac (1995)?

I grabbed this because I needed an audio book for my car. I didn't realize that this was in the middle of a series. Usually when I grab a book in the middle of a series I am really intrigued by the characters. Book series are generally really good a developing interesting and charismatic characters. However, in this book the characters felt very flat to me. The only reason that I can think of is that the author told and didn't show. Mac is a handsome, brilliant lawyer in DC. But the story didn't really support that to me.I will not be reading the rest of the series.

My first Margaret Truman mystery. I like the main characters well enough. Mac's love for Annabel is a bit sickening, maybe because I don't know them well enough, as this is the twelfth book in the series. Perhaps their relationship has been more deeply fleshed out in the earlier books, so Truman doesn't need to go into why he loves her so much at this juncture. I enjoyed DC as a character, and made notes about some of the restaurants Mac frequented to see if they're real, and if not, what they are based upon. I will read more, if I can get the books on my Kindle from the library, or paperbacks from the used bookstore.

Ok , finished, not who I thought the killer was. That's good. Makes for a good story not to figure out who done it too soon. Book 12 of the Capitol Crimes series. We are now into the early 90s. Mac Smith is giving some advice to a friend who's assistant was murdered. Everyone thinks he killed her because they were having an affair. Typical rich family on the hill, kids are spoiled rotten and have no compassion for anyone else in the family, wife is long-suffering because husband has had some affairs in the past. Adopted son has a gambling problem to the tune of millions. Not many people are feeling sorry for the family. Mac doesn't want to get involved but did say he would only help by being a consultant. So it takes until end to figure out who did what and why.
