My Commander (2000) - Plot & Excerpts

Shelly Laurenston fans? The 2 main characters in this book are similar to, and just as much fun as Blayne and Bo from Beast Behaving Badly. I very much enjoyed this book. There was a ton of geek humor, and I have a strong desire to read more about the characters from this book in the next installment. In fact, I liked every character in this book. That is author talent! Overall this book had a PG 13 feel to it, for whatever reason, it didn't bother me and I like shifter sex...a lot. Book 1 in a series is seldom outstanding, particularly shifter series, as the author must introduce characters, worlds, personalities, etc. So with that said, the actual storyline was not terribly exciting, there was very little shifter heat (much to my dismay), and very, very little shifting at all. Seriously though, the character development made up for that. I think book two is going to be hysterical, awkward people that trip and fall always crack me up. It's nice to have a new series on deck.***this book was not a cliffhanger A sweet and original paranormal story. It was an ok read. I didnt love it, but it flowed ok.The pros:* I loved the characters - especially Meryn. I enjoyed that she was afeisty heroine* The wide array of paranormal beings * The story concept was creative - I love how the mother put a spell to bring in the children's "mates"* It was pretty humorous throughoutCons:* I feel this book is overpriced at its current listing price of $4.99 - Its only 230+ pages and book 1 of a series* The heroine seemed to adapt too easily - she accepted a whole new world, family etc without so much as a concern* It felt as if they were constantly drinking tea - I wanted more to happen aside from getting together for tea every couple of pages* Everything just seemed too easy - I never really felt emotionally pulled into the storyline* Insta-love on all levels - a human comes to their world and within days she's already calling his parents "mom" and "dad" and exchanging I love you's. I felt none of the relationships in this book had much depth. * it had a very YA feel to it* At times I felt like I was missing the backstory - the paranormal beings had been alive hundresds of years, and we knew little to nothing about their lives before this story starts. Same with heroine. Which is why i suppose I felt this story lacked character depthAll in all this book was cute. No great excitement, or angst. It wasn’t an addicting read or anything that had me on the edge of my seat at any time, but it did made for an easy, simple light read. I may check out more of this series as they come out (but likely will not), but it's certainly not one of those releases I'll be counting down the days to read.

writing was a little choppy but it had more than a few true laugh-out-loud/ snorting moments.
