My Mouth Is A Volcano! (2008) - Plot & Excerpts

Summary: This story was about a boy who had a hard time controlling what he said and when he said it. The author describes how the words rolled down from his head and onto his tongue and so forth. He would blurt out at random times and that seemed to make people really unhappy with him. He didn't think anything was wrong with him until he got interrupted by someone during his "15 minutes of fame". His mom explained to him that that's how they felt when he did the same thing. He blamed it on his "volcano" meaning his mouth. Finally, they came to the solution of how to keep his words from blurting out. They stayed in his mouth and waited his turn.Analysis: The critical and social issues that are shown in this book are not to interrupt. It is hard for kids at a young age to tell when it is appropriate to talk and when it's not. It also shows children that they need to value respecting others by listening and waiting for their turn to talk. This is a great lesson all fit into a fun book that kids of any age would enjoy (I mean for goodness sake, I enjoyed it!). Much like Louis, the character in the book, my 4 year old has something "important" to say at all times. This book gave me a fantastic platform to talk to her about when it is appropriate to talk and when its not. Much more effective to teach a lesson when emotions aren't spiked from inappropriate behavior. In addition to talking about the problem, the book provides a solution to volcano mouth that is effective and easy for the little ones to understand. Now all I have to say is "volcano" and she knows its time to take a breath and wait her turn. The progress in just a few days has been amazing.
