My Secret Sister (2013) - Plot & Excerpts

Half of this book was really interesting and hooked me straight away, whilst I wanted to skip the other half. Helen's story had me gripped, turning the pages just as quick as I could read them. I grimaced, winced, and gasped out loud a couple of times during Helen's retro long of her childhood, whereas Jenny's wasn't so interesting, as it was not as tragic or gripping as Helen's.As happy as the ending was, I feel like it wasn't as gripping as the beginning, it didn't pull me in as much, but I suppose once you've read that far you have to know the ending. Being from around the same area as the twins, I could hear the accents written into the page, see the places they were describing. And now, living in Florida, it was easy to imagine their life over here. This was a book my grandmother left when she was on holiday over here, one my dad has tried to read before, and one I finished the same day I picked it up. Fits well with the family theme, no? A brilliant book, but not sure how I missed the bit that it was a true story. Good reading about Northumberland and Newcastle as I know so well. Well written, good descriptions of a tough period of time and family times. Tale of two people with different childhoods but both realise something is missing, one had a hard childhood one much easier and with love. It was a hard road to find the truth but sometimes things are worth it.I said to my Husband they are in Fairfield Road, West Jesmond where he grew up, little did I knew until the end when I spoke to him about it that his Mum went to Connie's hairdressers, small world, Connie being Jenny's Mum.Lovely book well written and nice that good things come for bad beginnings.
