My Sisters Voice (2010) - Plot & Excerpts

What a tale. While as a parent I find this story difficult to swallow, the author does a truly good job laying out the back story and explanation for the twins' separation. A story that at some points had my heart in physical pain because of the seemingly coldness of the parents. Also, even though I will never fully understand the deaf culture, I found the details of this famously private culture quite fascinating. Fascinating, yet puzzling.I held off on the fifth star because I had a hard time accepting the cruelty and selfishness of the deaf sister and then her sudden turn to kindness. I also find it incredibly hard to believe that a grown person surrounded by so many friends and loved ones would get away with such cruelty and meanness in her everyday life. I had a difficult time with this book. I felt as though the characters behaved in unbelivable ways and I just couldn't buy into it. I took ASL in college, and my Professor was the only hearing child in her family (five other siblings were all deaf)so I had a little insight into the deaf community. I felt as I were being hit over the head with deaf community facts - show, not tell. Not recommended.

Not great literature, but a pretty good page-turner. Perfect beach reading.
