My Summer Of Wes (2010) - Plot & Excerpts

Every so often I read a book where whatever flaws exist in terms of plot, or characterization, or grammar or whatever don't matter because of the way the book makes me feel. This was one of those times.True facts: I passed this book up a bunch of times because neither the blurb or the cover was all that appealing to me. I'm a shallow bitch, what can I say? But but, after some book induced Hulk smash rage earlier today I needed something happy and sappy and sweet to read and after covertly raiding the shelves of a few of my GR friends, I decided to take a chance on this. And I'm so glad I did.Malcolm Smalls is just one of the sweetest, kindest, gentlest soul that I've ever read about. He's got insecurities and some issues but he's also got an open mind and an open heart. When the book hearts he's lamenting his vanilla pudding life (no spice, no oomp, no color, just...plain, predictable, vanilla) and more than a little lonely. Then Wes Kinney moves in across the street and it's like Dorothy being transplanted from Kansas into the Land of Oz. Suddenly Mal's life has color and texture and flavor...and it's all because of Wes.Which is a bit of a complication. Because Mal has been bullied -horribly so- for appearing gay. He's never so much as looked sideways at another boy but that didn't matter to his tormentors...he was harassed and assaulted and ostracized and verbally abused and even though he made it through the horror of high school, it left a shadow on his heart and he's worried about the implications that accepting Wes and accepting his truth would have on the previously vanilla existence that was his life.Wes, to his credit, is patient and gentle and supportive. He's the perfect compliment to Mal and he gives him the time and space to work things out without any pressure or expectations. He's also brave and intelligent and protective and the way he deals with Mal is gentle and loving. The two of them are just lovely together. Make no mistake, even though there are some weighty issues raised (such as Mal's harassment and bullying by his peers) this is a super light, relatively angst free read and there are some things left somewhat unresolved but that didn't even bother me. It's cotton candy sugar fluff smothered in honey and then deep fried in chocolate and topped with whipped cream. And I ate it up like I was Starvin' Marvin. This book just made me feel good and sometimes...that's what's important. It's one of those rainy day comfort reads and I can see myself returning to it again and again. 3 SMUT FILLED STARSBtw.... WORST COVER EVER! Creepy as fuckI'm giving this 3 stars because I thought Wes and Mal were so freaking cute and I liked how Wes little by little got inside Mal's skin. It was super hot, that it def was.But...I felt this really had no substance. Everything happened so fast and I thought some of the scenes were lame and ugh Nothing to remember, that's for sure.

What do You think about My Summer Of Wes (2010)?

This is a sweet YA love story with slightly NA sex, held together by the adorable Wes.
