My Teacher Is A Monster! (No, I Am Not.) (2014) - Plot & Excerpts
Robert's teacher, Ms. Kirby, is a monster. She stomps and roars and doesn't like paper airplanes. Bobby spends his free time forgetting about his teacher problems. One day, while he's walking in the park he suddenly comes across Ms. Kirby! Ahhhhhh! He bravely sits down next to her on the bench and strikes up a conversation. He tells her he likes her hat and is able to save it for her when it blows off in a breeze. Ms. Kirby then shares with Bobby her love of quacking with the ducks in the pond. Bobby feels that he can share his special place with her. Both climb a hill and enjoy the view. Ms. Kirby even gives him a piece of paper to make a paper airplane. When Bobby sends it flying they both agree it's the best flight ever made by a paper airplane.Throughout the story readers will see what Bobby sees: the gradual transition of Ms. Kirby from Big Green Monster to pretty young teacher. Great story to show kids that teachers have a life outside school, and they aren't "mean" all the time. This doesn't strike me as original as Brown's other books (Mr Tiger, and Curious Garden esp.), it somehow reminds me of the "Black Lagoon" books in terms of storyline, and the artwork is similar to Mr. Tiger. Despite those quibbles, I like Brown's books a lot. I doubt this will be a serious award contender, but I still like it, and i think kids will too.
