Nancy's Mysterious Letter (1996) - Plot & Excerpts

Very Good! I would give this book to a 4th grader about 3 4ths of the way through fourth grade or a fifth grader who is half way or before half way through the year. For A.R., this book is 4.9 points. Love all the mysteries put in one book. Kind of a bit cheesy because a bunch of mysteries are coming to Nancy in one book! Crazy! But good.SPOILER ALERT DO NOT READ AHEAD IF YOU DON"T WANT IT SPOILED. SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT. DO NOT READ AHEAD IF YOU DO NOT WANT THE BOOK SPOILED> SPOILER ALERT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GO ON IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO READ IT> IT IS WAY AT THE BOTTOM> SCROLL DOWN.Nancy receives a letter about an inheritance in England for her. Turns out it is for a different Nancy Smith Drew. Nancy finds Miss Nancy Smith Drew and she gets her inheritance. While that mystery is going on, Ira Nixon, a mailman and a friend of Nancy's, was invited while on mailman duty into Nancy's house for some hot cocoa. While he was inside, his half brother stole his letter bag. In that bag was Nancy's Dad's letter, which was filled with a large sum of money. It was stolen, too. At the end the half brother, Edgar Nixon, is arrested at the airport.

Nancy's Mysterious Letter is a children's story by Carolyn Keene (pseudonym) and the 8th book in the Nancy Drew series. The young detective, Nancy Drew, receives a letter stating that she is to receive an inheritance, but the letter is intended for another Nancy Drew, a young woman who is about to become the victim of a devious plot.I’ve always been a voracious reader. So, as a child, one of my favorite things about summer was the frequent trips to our local library, which was less than a mile from our house. Like most young girls of a certain age (ahem), my love for mysteries started with Nancy Drew—there simply was no mystery too baffling that she couldn’t solve. And as I would read her most current adventure, I would imagine myself following in her footsteps … taking charge and plunging ahead, getting into mischief, chasing down culprits and solving the mystery. Even though I haven’t re-read any of these books since I was a child, I still think that Nancy is a great character—her courage, confidence and fierce independence, makes her an iconic source of inspiration for young girls everywhere. A must-read children's book, Nancy's Mysterious Letter is another wonderful Nancy Drew mystery.

I reckon that the copy of this book which I own is from the 1960s due to the style of drawings, but it appears to be the original 1932 text. I now understand the statement on Wikipedia which said that the British publishers of Nancy Drew "revised" the books to suit the British audience. The British Nancy Drew books which I've read (one of which was published as early as the 70s) have a lot more detail in them, and appear to portray Nancy as a young woman in the 1950s, not the 1930s. There were a lot of comments in this book about Nancy being a brilliant and contentious driver, and several people lectured her on "not knowing her place" and being too independent for a woman of her age. Bess and George barely featured and Ned acted like he was formally courting Nancy! Nancy also wears evening gowns and sets out to buy a hat in the Emerson colours to wear to Ned's football game. As quaint as this book was, I definitely prefer the British Nancy Drew books. The mystery is generally much more complex and detailed. Overall, this was a rather sweet book to read, but Nancy just didn't seem to be the Nancy Drew who I grew up with. 5/10

Nancy Drew’s interest was piqued when Ira Nixon, the mailman, mentioned that he had a letter from her that had come all the way from England. She is fairly certain that she knows no one from England and tries to deduce the import of the letter. But before Mr. Nixon can deliver it to her, his entire mailbag is stolen!Nancy immediately sets about trying to find the letter. When she discovers that the purpose of the letter was to discover a young lady named Nancy Smith Drew, whose English relations had recently died leaving an inheritance to her, Nancy decides that she must not only track down the mail thief, but also the missing Nancy Drew! The plot thickens, though, when these two mysteries come together to form one brain twister. Can Nancy sort out the villains from the innocents in time to save Nancy Smith Drew?Discussion. This story was super fun. With each Nancy Drew story I read, I can’t help but admire her a little more. Take this one, for example – in the very first scene Nancy takes pity upon an older friend of hers who must walk his postman’s route in the snow. She offers to give him a lift in her car and, when he refuses, insists that he come around for cocoa as soon as possible to help him warm up. This is a degree of kindness which is not often demonstrated in modern children’s literature.I also approve of the relationship she maintains with her father – although she often drives around town and occasionally out of town by herself, she always consults with her father before taking large steps in her cases.Conclusion. Good – I’m going to keep buying these stories.Visit The Blithering Bookster to read more reviews!www.blitheringbookster.com
