I resented her hours upon hours of sex with Don, and she blamed me for the whole out-of-control situation in the first place. Neither of us ever came out and verbalized our feelings, but it was right beneath the surface, palpable. Don and Anita didn't call us right away. The following Thursday evening, though, we noticed that they were having their usual neighborhood happy hour on their deck. "Should we go over?" Becky asked. "I don't know," I replied. "I still feel weird." Becky sighed. "Look, we can't have this over our heads forever. They're our neighbors. If we can't bear to see them, we should probably move." "You're right, you're right," I conceded, "but let's only stay a little while." Becky nodded affirmatively. Apprehensively, we walked across to their house, and went up the stairs to their deck. Anita spotted us first, and raised an eyebrow at Don who looked over in our direction. Then, as if on cue, both of them smiled brightly and descended upon us.
