Nelly May Has Her Say (2013) - Plot & Excerpts

This is a fun book. Young Nelly May goes to work for a Lord Pinkwinkle. She does this because her family is so large and they do not have enough to eat. Lord Pinkwinkle has a very special language of his own that he requires Nelly to learn. She cleans and cooks for the Lord and even learns his language. That turns out to be lucky in saving his life, when there is a fire at the manor. Nelly decides the special language is silly and goes home. But that is not the end of the tale. The story is filled with word play and humor that my classes found to be fun. The font is in black and of a medium size that is easy to read. The text is place on each page at the top or the bottom and the pictures cover the page. Making up words for common items can be a great way to expand from this story and give students an opportunity at playing with words. In this quirky charmer full of fun wordplay and based on the English folktale "Master of All Masters," quick-thinking Nelly May takes a job keeping house for Lord Pinkwinkle. Lord Pinkwinkle insists that Nelly May use special (and especially strange) names to refer to him and his things, but when an unexpected turn of events endangers the life of the Most Excellent of All Masters' fur-faced fluffenbarker, Nelly May speaks up--and teaches the Most Excellent of All Masters a thing or two in the process.

What do You think about Nelly May Has Her Say (2013)?

Fun retelling of an English folktale with lots of wordplay. Kids can be encouraged to do their own.
