I loved this book. When I read a historical, I want to do more than get lost in a different era. I want to learn. Jenkins has that down in spades. Some of you might be distracted by some of the facts that creep into this book, but I was sometimes holding the book with one had and Googling with the other. Dude who made some kind of purse out of human skin? Draconian anti-immigration laws that punished the Chinese? These are things you don't find in your average historical. I lapped it up.Maggie is one of the most kick-ass heroines ever, and this comes from someone who's watched plenty of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Marvel movies. To have grown up with the kind of adversity Maggie faced and to still be able to keep her wits and cause some trouble went beyond admiration. As for The Preacher? Well, Jenkins had me at Bounty Hunter who quotes the Bible. Having the story start in Scotland where we find out he's have Scottish? Bonus. It almost goes without saying that the Preacher is a certified badass, too. He and Maggie pair well. I especially like the amount of respect he has for her and for her abilities.I only have one complaint, one that will hit the romance purists: the emotional conflict finds resolution about two-thirds of the way through the book. I found that a little jarring, but I was already so invested in the characters that I went along for the ride. And I would do it again. Night Hawk is adventure-romance with a touch of comedy and plenty of heart. Now, if you will excuse me, I gotta go find me more Beverly Jenkins books... I am blaming Dear Author for this. I don't know why I never tried Beverly Jenkins before because this was REALLY good. A few things I didn't like or thought were too coincidental but overall very enjoyable. Both the h/h were strong characters who did what they had to not just survive but to try to enjoy. They didn't take crap from anyone nor did they sit and wait for someone to come along and change their lives. Jenkins also provided me with some laughs while I was reading because several of the situations made my heart break at how certain subsets of people in America were, have been and still are treated.
What do You think about Night Hawk (2011)?
