Nightspell (2011) - Plot & Excerpts

I thought this book was great. It was clean, the plot was fairly original, and it met my need for a fluffy book that would keep me engaged easily. There were also many parts that made me laugh out loud. I definitely recommend it. That being said, there were a few things that drove me nuts. Darri was really annoying. I didn't like how everybody was so disgusted by the ghosts. If someone I loved died, I wouldn't be grossed out just looking at their ghost. It's the bad ghosts who are scary. So it didn't make sense (and it was actually kind of offensive) that Darri was horrified at her sister even when Callie chose to take on a solid form that looked just like her living self.I thought it was really weird that Callie spent the entire book upset that she was stuck being a ghost but then wouldn't let Darri break the spell. I think the author was trying to make a point about how we are all scared of what becomes of us after death, but Callie changed her mind without warning, which made me confused. The science/theory behind being a ghost was very unclear and I never figured it out. *Won on Goodreads*The books that I love, are always the ones that I have a hard time talking about. But I will try my best to explain why I love this book.Reason #1:The WorldI love the world Leah Cypess creates. Even in the first book, Miswood -which I didn't like- I LOVED the world. The world is mystical, magical, and hauntingly beautiful. I loved the descriptions of Ghosland, and the ghost.Reason #2: The CharactersI loved the characters and the bonds between them. The relationship between the siblings was sad and heart wrenching. And the relationship between Keistan and Clarisse was also intriguing. The book is focused on relationships, which was new and fresh.Reason #3:The endingWhile a lot of people hated the ending, I loved it! It fit with the story. We never really did learn what happened to Callie. That may be frustrating, but that's the beauty of it. Like the story, the ending was a mystery and open. You decide what happens to Callie. There's a lot more reasons of why I love this -like the writing, and tone- but I won't get into that. Overall, this book was amazing. Beautifully written with great characters, it's a book that everyone should read.*However, if you really hate slow books, don't read this. Unless you really want to. Then, read it.*
