Not A Chance (2000) - Plot & Excerpts

This was an Amazon freebie that I started a while back and read slowly. Mainly because I had it on my phone and not my reader.I just was never able to put it down. So why only two stars, you may ask. Well, this story is sort of like watching a reality t.v. series about people living in a small, back water type town. You know it's going to be a train wreck but you can't get yourself to change the channel. There are several storylines going on. The main one with Arden and Travis isn't totally satisfying. But then neither is reality t.v. scripting. So if you like watching that sort of cable programming, you may find you enjoy this story. I am so glad I found this book! It was one of those stories that kept me up late because I got wrapped up in the characters. The book is very well-written and edited, and I am impressed that it is the author's debut novel. The characters were real (thank god). There was no trying to sugarcoat Arden's behavior. That's important to the story because we get to watch her transform from cold and practical to fun and loving. The scene where this change is most evident (toward the end, I won't spoil) had me aching for both her and Travis. And as far as Emma, I don't think there's any doubt that there are families like hers, especially those involved with the church. But she got her snark in at just the right times.I adored Travis - he was the right mix of masculine, sensitive, sexy and sweet. We should all be lucky enough to have a Travis in our lives! And funny too, I was really giggling at some of the sparring between the two. Travis is easily sidetracked by his libido, which is always funny. There are sex scenes - yay! - and they are good: concise and detailed.Read this book, especially if you like a good character study! I will definitely keep my eye out for more from Carter Ashby.
