Nubs: The True Story Of A Mutt, A Marine & A Miracle (2009) - Plot & Excerpts
This is a touching story about a dog, named Nubs, and how he befriended an American solider in Iraq. The dog, with nubs as ears, followed Brian and the other Marines around whenever they were stationed in his area. Nubs always chased after Brian and the Humvees when they left. Brian's group was eventually moved to the Jordanian border, 70 miles away. Nubs traveled this entire distance to reach Brian. Nubs found a home with Brian and the other soldiers until two soldiers reported them. Brian was forced to get rid of Nubs in four days. Unable to send him away after forming their friendship, Brian asked for donations to transport Nubs to America. Nubs made it and Brian joined him in CA shortly after! I would recommend this book for primary students although all readers would enjoy the story of friendship and peace in a time of war. This book has won the 2012-2013 Golden Sower Award and is a nominated Bluestem Award book. Short, fast read. Not a literary classic, by any stretch, but who cares? The man (military serviceman in Iraq) saved a dog (stray in Iraq) ... an amazing dog (not that they all need to be amazing to qualify for being saved) who would not give up on the man he bonded with and found him, against all odds and across an incredible distance. I read it in about 15 minutes, but I LOVED the story. I wish everyone would make such an effort to help unfortunate animals. Maybe there would be less suffering in the world, if they did. Thank you for brightening my day by sharing your story.
