I'm reading the books by Michael Connelly in order and only have 5 to go! Several of the last ones I've read have been a little to disturbing for my tastes, but "Nine Dragons" was wonderful. Yes, it was deadly, but it wasn't really disturbing like some of the others. And, I really liked that it brought back several characters from other books and other series, including his daughter. It was a great story! Nine Dragons by Michael Connelly is the 15th book in the Harry Bosch mystery series set in contemporary Los Angeles. Much of the action in this riveting thriller is set in Hong Kong, where Bosch’s ex-wife Eleanor and daughter Maddie live, and in Kowloon (which means Nine Dragons). As the story begins, LAPD homicide detective Harry Bosch takes on a case where the owner of an Asian market was shot to death. Evidence suggests the crime was committed by a triad gang member (the triads are based in Hong Kong). The creation of the triads goes back to the 17th century in China. Of the 113 Buddhist monks in the Shaolin monastery, all but 5 were attacked and killed by Manchu invaders. The surviving 5 monks created secret societies with the goal of overthrowing the invaders. To honor the ghosts of the slaughtered monks, the extortion amounts demanded by triads are usually a multiple of 108.Suddenly, investigating the case takes on terrifying personal consequences for Bosch – and you can’t put the book down. Even after you think the suspense is over…keep reading. The plot twists and turns at the end – nothing you (or Harry) assumed was correct. A very satisfying read from a grand master of mystery and crime thrillers.
