Nurse, Soldier, Spy: The Story Of Sarah Edmonds, A Civil War Hero (2011) - Plot & Excerpts

Although the main character, Sarah Emma Edmonds, is a fascinating subject who had a number of adventures, the writing leaves something to be desired. The author tells the story too quickly at times, and the sentence structure can be distracting. However, the biographical information is novel and interesting; I had not heard of Sarah Edmonds before reading this book. At nineteen she cut her hair, dressed in men's clothes, and came to the United States from Canada to escape an arranged marriage. She served in the army, both as a nurse and a spy. However, the story ends there; much too soon. Still, the illustrations are engaging and playful while informative and full of action.Reading Level: 820L A great introduction to Sarah Emma Edmonds. The only woman on record who pretended to be a main prior to the Civil War and then continued her disguise in order to become a soldier. Some very interesting details about her time as a soldier that might inspire the reader to do additional research to find out more. The author's note gives additional information as well as discussing the sources in which the information was found.
