O Dia Do Predador (2011) - Plot & Excerpts

I enjoyed this story a great deal, and almost lived it vicariously through some imagined early or preteen version of myself. I had, of course, worked out what appears so out-of-the-blue right at the end of the book: but would I have, when I was ten? Eleven? Twelve? probably not. The impact that might have been, as it were. I still got a lot out of reading it and am enjoying the series, although they cannot, of course, compete on an intellectual level with material aimed at older people they are exciting and just sheer good fun all the same. Better than the last one, in places. I felt like the writing flowed a little bit better, although there was still occasional telling rather than showing. One chapter in particular comes to mind where a host is leading some kids round on a field trip, and every line of his is prefaced with: "As I'm sure you're aware..." If they already know it, why tell them? It came across as artificial, but thankfully, I only noticed it this one time- can't be sure, maybe it was in other parts as well. The characters also seemed better developed, especially in terms of internal conflict: now that they all know a little more about time travel and its effects, they're starting to get a little wary, and I see arguments in the future. There were some fun lines of dialogue now Maddy and Sal feel like they're used to time travel. "We're going to have to fill in the floor again, aren't we?"That said, I remember thinking the one before this was surprisingly dark for a YA novel, and I think this one's taken it even further. The violence is graphic, pretty grisly, and probably not something I would want anyone under the age of sixteen or so reading. Two incidents stood out to me: one, when a character sees something that looks like a maggot on the floor, leans down to discover it's a human finger, and two, a character who quite literally has their heart torn out of their chest. I guess it depends on whether or not you like that kind of violence: personally, I found it disturbing, and I wouldn't recommend this for anyone who's a bit queasy.
