Sherry Thomas writing was as usual good, but I didn't enjoy this book as much as Private Arrangements and His At Night. As other reviewers have mentioned, it was a bit too fantastical to be believed, and I'm pretty good at suspending my disbelief! Possibly because the over-the-top reactions to Verity's food reminded me of the anime & manga Yakitate! Japan! ^^Slight Spoiler alert! Also found the ending incredibly contrived and unbelievable. The way the aunt handled the whole situation, especially after the fact of Verity's escape with her poor lover made my eyebrows climb significantly. Let's never explain anything, and instead try to repel everyone from the niece because twu wuv can only be found that way? Or something. I don't know, it makes no sense. This is one of the best-written historical romances that I have ever read, and I read a LOT of them. Thomas has such a talent with plot, SETTING, language, and characterization. Her stories and her characters are complex and compelling, and the late Victorian setting is a nice change from the Regency period, and offers up so many more possibilities for the female characters. I rarely give 5-star reviews, but I could not put this one down and I know I will remember it long after. I do agree with some reviewers who said that the ending was a bit too tidy, but it's a minor quibble. This IS still formula fiction, after all. So glad I have discovered Sherry Thomas!
What do You think about O Fruto Proibido (2010)?
A boring and tedious read. Unfortunately can't give this book less than a one star rating.
