Of Light And Darkness (2011) - Plot & Excerpts

My thoughts: I wasn't sure if I would like this book. I love vampire but it seemed a little old age vampire. But I gave it a chance and loved it. The beginning was kinda hard to get through. Trying to figure out what is going on with Valek, the vampire, but finding the baby changes things. It brings you into a new light of things. He raises this girl to be human and not a vampire, which it strange. It brings you back to "The Cullen's" from "Twilight" and how they change each other to be vampires. He takes a daring step and keeps her human. Mistake or great idea? Now it bugs me that he raised Charlotte to go out and find humans to feed him. I don't think I could handle getting food for my vampire father! I would have to draw a line, but it just brings the authors brilliance to light. I immediately loved Charlotte, just living with the creature of the night and feeding. Going against the grain and rules set by dear old dad. She has fire and spunk in her that makes her easy to want to be friends with, help or even fall for. And her dad does which makes my skin crawl, but then again who wouldn't. In my opinion most worlds filled with vampire and wizards are rules by vampires this on is not. Aiden, hum..I don't know what I can say that won't give anything away but...humm.My rating: 4 stars An abandoned infant, found in Prague by one of the few remaining Vampires left in the world. A magical society ruthlessly hidden from mortals. A love that could destroy them all. When Charlotte Ruzikova was found in Prague, she instantly captured the undead heart of Valek Ruzik, a reclusive Vampire. Valek raises Lottie as his own in the Occult, the land of magic that is kept hidden from all mortals by the Regime. Charlotte grows up to love the enchanted world filled with magical creatures. Although she knows she is different, she counts Elves, Witches, and Phasers among her closest friends. As the ward of a Vampire, Charlotte lives her life in the darkness, content to serve Valek and to have him to herself. As she grows into a young woman, she begins to yearn for more.As Valek and Charlotte begin to sense a shift in their relationship, malefic plans were being made to rid the world of all Vampires. The head of the Regime, Vladislov, has spent nearly twenty years plotting revenge on Valek. His plan is to rid the world of all Vampire's and therefore all darkness.Aiden Price, once a close friend of Charlotte's, has been obsessed with her for years. As he gets closer to being named the next ruler of the Regime, Aiden plots ways to capture Charlotte so they can begin their life together.Charlotte and Valek are forced from his home by the Regime, but they are caught. With the unexpected help from Aiden, Valek and Charlotte escape from the Regime. In Old Towne, they meet up with a coven of Vampires. After a shaky start, Charlotte begins to trust their new friends and despite her humanity, they accept her as one of their own.Magical deceptions and betrayal land Charlotte in her wedding dress. The only question: who is the groom?Ms. Leighton has created a very interesting magical world. I loved the Phaser who was part man/part spider. My favorite new creature was the burlap boy named Edwin.I also love that the author took some liberties and put a unique spin on vampire lore. These vampires didn't only have to fear the rising sun because of the damage is would do to their bodies. Each morning, the vampires would die a horrible death only to be revived again once the sun went down. Also, after centuries of being lied to, the vampires found a way to be able to withstand sunlight.Throughout the story I never doubted Valek and Charlotte's feelings for one another and always maintained hope that they would find their happily-ever-after.Reviewed by Lori
