Of Thee I Sing, My Country (2000) - Plot & Excerpts

This book made me cry. It is a lovely and inspiring letter written by Barak Obama to his two daughters. The people depicted in the book are all people who have struggled through adversity to create something beautiful and make change to our society. The illustrations are very sweet and truthful. It is real and true to life and includes a list of people that should be explored for their contributions to the United States of America. Audience: PrimaryGenre: NonfictionFiction Twin Text:Praise Song for the DayBy Elizabeth AlexanderI chose Praise Song for the Day because it includes the poem that was written for and read at President Obama's inauguration day. I think it is a nice companion for Of Thee I Sing because of the common themes throughout. Just as President Obama wrote of overcoming struggles and having courage and hope, Alexander's poem does the same.

Useless, 10-word review: Made me all weepy. Beautiful illustrations and stunning, lyrical prose.
