This was a great book that I couldn't stop reading! I even got up early, like 5:30am to get back to the book. At first, I didn't like the hero much. But rather than scuttle the book, I read on. He grew and changed as the author revealed more about the story and much from his pov. It wasn't long before I was as in love with Marshall as the heroine was. The book was loaded with surprises, plot twist-- all credible -- that kept me on the edge of my seat. The love scenes were just right, steamy but not too graphic. I loved the pluck and moxy shown by the heroine who always found a way to survive. The regency details, clothing and room descriptions had enough detail to be authentic, but not so much as to bog the book down. Great read! I so enjoyed it. If you like regency, don't miss this one. If only we women today could have the forgiving and patient heart of Isabelle, the heroine of this story. Wrongfully accused of infidelity by her mother in law, and divorced by her husband (coward didn't even let her explain but took his mother's side instantly), she makes her way in the world all on her own, without letting bitterness or pride hold her back. Taking a position as a cook in an inn, she unexpectedly runs into her ex on one of his travels while he stays at the inn. Appalled that his ex-duchess is working, he arranges for her brother, who recently ceased to provide for her, to take her back in. Her brother insists she marry immediately to set the family name to rights after the scandal that "she caused". I pretty much wanted to punch every man in this story...and her mother in law. She is thrown back into London's marriage mart, forced to spend time near her ex-husband (who she still loves) and his soon-to-be fiancé. Her ex-husband, the Duke, decides to help her find a proper match so that he can end whatever feelings still seem to remain from his marriage to her. He can't get her out of his mind. Isabelle is noble, strong, and never seems to complain, knowing it will not make a difference, as she is powerless to right the wrong done to her. There is a lot of angst and heartache throughout the story, and when everything looks to be heading towards a HEA, a new twist puts off Isabelle's and the Duke's happiness again. I liked the story and loved Isabelle's strength and humility, however, I wish that there was more care for her in the end since she deserved so much after being dragged through the mud all those years. Overalll good read though. I was left feeling satisfied with the outcome but would have given her an ending with a little more punch, had I been writing the story. Had it been me, I would have literally have had to slap at least one of the men from the story....but that is why I love Isabelle so much....her sweet humility. She is a better woman.
What do You think about Once A Duchess (2013)?
I thought this story was well written and expect much out of the author.
