One Day (2009) - Plot & Excerpts

Synopsis: Emma and Dexter meet for the first time on the night of their graduation. Tomorrow they must go their separate ways. So where will they be on this one day next year? And the year after that? And every year that follows?Twenty years, two people, ONE DAY.I have to admit, I was skeptical about this book. I don't know, maybe it was something about the synopsis or people's reviews that mainly focused on the romance that put me off. However, I was completely and utterly wrong from the start and it only took a few pages to get me hooked on the down-to-earth and stunningly realistic portrayal of entering adulthood, the second stage of growing up if you will for Emma and Dexter. The reason for my 4 instead of 5 stars was perhaps my own fault in that I read it during a time in which I was particularly busy so that I didn't really get to throw myself into the story and emotionally invest myself in the characters so by reading in kind of 10/15 minute chunks I didn't really get attached. However that can all be rectified in my inevitable re-read in a less busy time.I really liked the ending too. There was just enough closure for me to put the book down contentedly without getting frustrated or wanting more, wanting answers. The fact that it wasn't your traditional happy ending in which they "all lived happily ever after" was a big bonus for me too because Nicholls kept it more real than that and more believable without it being a kind of 'that's it, everybody dies, the end' kind of book.To all those who label it as a 'romance' book as well in reviews - for shame. Yes, there are times when you as a reader are sat saying aloud to yourself, "Oh just kiss for crying out loud!" Often, in inappropriately public places but you are behind our two protagonists as well in all aspects of their lives, their careers, beliefs and happiness. This book is what life reads like, not 'romance' or even 'comedy' like the reviews bombard potential readers with.It is said that a of people like neither Dexter or Emma as protagonists but from my glance, I just saw them as people with faults and dislikes that aren't often portrayed in books so the Author gets you to like the main character and that is it, yay great characterization! Frankly, it was only when Dexter was in Emma’s presence that I could even moderately stand him, but again, and therefore I thought that was rather brilliant characterization on the author’s part as Nicholls really showed how people change with others, how people change with experience and how people change with time. For most of the book Emma is a walking, talking catastrophe. Pinning after a man who isn’t worthy of her, lost and directionless. Filled with dreams and utterly clueless as to how to make them a reality. But she endeared herself to me with her fiery passion, intellect (except in matters of the heart), indecision and lack of self confidence. “You’re gorgeous, you old hag, and if I could give you just one gift ever for the rest of you life it would be this. Confidence. It would be the gift of confidence. Either that or a scented candle,” David Nicholls, One DayI have to say it is one of the best books I’ve ever read. It’s funny, honest and unbelievably true to life. There were moments where I provoked odd looks from passers by when I’d literally laughed out loud and even once, gasped. It is definitely one of those books I miss.
