Penelope sat in the living room pretending to read her book. She looked exhausted. By the time they’d gotten home last night, it had been close to 4:00 in the morning. He’d awoken at his normal 6:00. Penelope wandered out of her bedroom not too long after that looking shell-shocked and exhausted. They’d immediately gone by the bookstore to see if the gift was still there. The photo and frame were gone, but that’s all there was to it. No note. No nothing. Now they were both waiting for the other shoe to drop. He agreed with Penelope. He didn’t think Julie’s gift was the one they’d been referring to, but he was as stumped as her. He had no idea what gift the note referred to. As he set the coffee cup down on the counter it thunked. The sound caused Penelope to jump. Okay, that was enough. They weren’t going to sit around here all day waiting for something to happen and jumping at every little noise. He strode into the living room and took the book out of her hands.
