I love Greek mythology so I was excited about Opression (Children of the Gods). What I got was a poorly written book that I had to struggle to finish. The characters aren't well developed and the plot jumps all over the place. It seemed like the author had a lot of what she thought were great ideas, but didn't know how to incorporate them or execute them properly.For instance, the romance between Elyse and Will is rushed, and even though Elyse is over 80 years old, her character didn't come across as an adult. It also didn't make sense that her family hid her for so many years and now she's completely out in the open. The whole thing was odd. Also, the character of Kara? Still no idea what that was about.I wouldn't really recommend this book to someone and I don't plan on reading the sequel. I adored this book! Both as a fan of the genre as well as Greek mythology, I found this book to be fast-paced (I finished it in about a day) and excellently written. The characters and their relationships were refreshing -- if I read one more wereanimal/vampire/faerie series I may well stab myself in the eye -- and I found that the oddities of the main character were believable (for example, her naiveté at her advanced age is well explained by the fact that she has spent most of her life exceedingly sheltered, or we can assume that her race doesn't mature at the same pace as the rest of humanity; her relationship with the hero is similarly explained) when taken in context of the universe. I am excitedly looking forward to the sequel!
What do You think about Oppression (2012)?
It was an interesting read. Will definitely catch the sequel.
