Os Prazeres De X: Uma Visita Guiada à Matemática De Um Ao Infinito (2012) - Plot & Excerpts
Such a lovely little book! I should mention that the idea of sitting down and reading about math is not necessarily appealing to me. However, this book is whimsical and interesting and clever and definitely taught me a thing or two or twelve that I can't believe I didn't ever learn in all my years of school math. Super interesting! And not just for math's sake (since I don't care so much about that), but for all the ways math plays out in real life. And it's structured such that you could just read a chapter or two at a time, not even necessarily in order, if you're someone who REALLY can't stomach the idea of sitting down to read cover-to-cover a book about math. I'm super glad I read it. This book was pretty good. When I started it, I would've gone for 5 stars. However, I felt it went on a bit too long and so even as a math teacher, I found my interest waning towards the end. There are some really neat, fun explorations of math to be found in here, however. And the author is personable. You can pretty much be certain that every chapter will end with some kind of math-related pun.
