Other (2010) - Plot & Excerpts

A kitsune and a phooka, two of my favorite magical creatures out there. There really aren't too many books out there about them and I was very happy to see them together in one book. Besides them, though, the world Kincy created is very diverse. Pretty much anything paranormal you can imagine has a home within these pages and that was very nice, especcially since it wasn't overdone. You didn't need to meet every single creature to get afeel for this world. The characters were relatively easy to like even if they weren't too deep, there are two other books in the series, Southey do all have room to grow. Gwen did change throughout the story, but I don't think mature is the rightword for her changes. Tavien was my favorite character, he was definitely the best written.Through the whole thing there is a murderer mystery and I had heard that it was a twist on who did it. I reckon I'm pretty good at figuring these things out, for the most part I'm normally spot on, but this one really was a twist. Sometimes I think this author couldn't convey the full meaning she wanted to. Scenes felt a little hollow - like they had potential to be more.Having said that, I really enjoyed this book. Mixing fantasy and mystery (two of my favorite genres) while cleverly integrating less main stream mythological creatures from many cultures. (Alright "mythological creatures" is a wierd way to put it, but I don't know how else to categorize all of them in one phrase.) The author was accurate for what I know of these creatures (admittedly little, besides kitsune). I thought the way she portrayed kitsune was extremely interesting since "Others" seem to be mostly-human folk creatures. Kitsune are usually more portrayed as foxes who gain the ability to become human, so I liked how she bent this to her concept for "Others".On the mystery side, I couldn't pin the killer until the very last moment. The author threw out a red herring (that the main character was painfully oblivious to for most of the story) and I fell for it hook, line, and sinker. I think this made it even more fun, but delving farther into this topic would mean spoilers, so I'll just say this: I can't wait to read the next book and I hope you give tis one a try! :D

What do You think about Other (2010)?

I liked the interaction between the characters in the book although the story was not that unique.

Unfortunately it just seemed too predictable, and I gave up.
