Some of the main people talked about are our current president Barak Obama, Martin Luther King Jr., and Rosa Parks. These three are just a few of the many people depicted int he poetic story or the struggle and progress African Americans have gone through and made over the years. This could be used in the classroom in a number of ways, on Martin Luther King Jr. day or during black history month. Some of the finest illustrators in the country provided the art for each section which leads to the next. The book ends with details of each of the characters who set the stage for the next: George Washington Carver, Jesse Owens, Hattie McDaniel, Ella Fitzgerald, Jackie Robinson, Rosa Parks, Ruby Bridges, Martin Luther King, Thurgood Marshall and Barack Obama. The book is easy to read and can be used to teach about each of the historical figures as well as how one person’s actions and life can help pave the way for future generations to even greater accomplishment and success. Although many more historical characters could be included it certainly makes the point that individuals can make huge differences as trailblazers creating opportunity for future generations.
