Overdressed: The Shockingly High Cost Of Cheap Fashion (2012) - Plot & Excerpts
4 StarsThis quote sums up this book perfectly:"We currently spend the most money on brands names and high end designers. Instead of shopping for a name or label, our hard-earned money should be going toward good materials and garments with a strong and unique design vision. We need more designers making good clothes. And more consumers who are willing to buy them." pg. 204I completely agree. An extremely important, eye-opening book for me personally as a sometime shopping addict. This quote about a Salvation Army in Queens, NY is just one of the many shocking things I learned."The Quincy Street Salvation Army builds a completed wall made of 18 tons, or 36 bales, of unwanted clothing every three days. And this is just a small portion of the cast-offs of one single Salvation Army location in one city in the United Sates."I find the solutions Cline presents to be quite reasonable: maintain, mend and alter the clothing I have and shop infrequently, being ever mindful of the impact of my choices. Now that I am more aware of these shameful impacts (globalization's destruction of the American manufacturing sector, human exploitation and abuse, horrific waste) I will gladly shop less.

Interesting look into the garment industry and how things are changing again-- to China and back.
