Paddington Helps Out (2002) - Plot & Excerpts

I love Paddington! This is the third book about him and even though the first is by far the best, it is still a very funny and enjoyable read. Will definitely have to find some Paddington books for my child when she's old enough. In this book, we go along on several adventures with Paddington - we go for a picnic on the river with him, to a auction house, the cinema, the launderette and out for dinner, as well as see Paddington trying to cook dinner and - my favourite - Paddington as a do it yourself type of bear who tries to build a magazine rack. He gets the rack build - but destroys a kitchen table in the process... It's easy to get into trouble when you're only a small bear with paws... and it's very funny to read about.

There's not much character development throughout this series, and the books are starting to run together for me. I find it strange that someone would leave a bear in charge of a household while the owners of the home were on bed rest. And one of the later illustrations in the book of Paddington eating is actually kind of scary. I can't quite picture how a stranger who's been subject to one of Paddington's "stares" would end up finding the fellow endearing. But my son still loves the books, so I'll keep reading them to him.

All the Paddington stories are such a delight. He's a favorite character of mine -- this earnest and adventurous young bear from Darkest Peru, living with the Browns in England and getting into and out of scrapes and just... I love Paddington. ^_^In this one, among other things he goes for a picnic on the river, goes to an auction, does some carpentry, cooking, and laundry, and dines out at a very fancy restaurant. All with hilarious mishaps and outcomes! If you've never picked up one of these books, do yourself a favor and read one!
