During a trip to the library I looked for something new. The review said it was a French satire, so I took home Michael Bond’s Monsieur Pamplemousse Afloat (better known for his Paddington Bear series). I would advise a reader to have some knowledge of French culture and a bit of vocabulary. With that in hand (in brain?), you’ll be delighted. There were several laugh-out-loud passages as the retired Surete inspector navigates Jeeves-like through a plan to replace his current employer’s logo, requiring a unique weight-loss program aboard a gastronomic barge, involving a Marilyn Monroe look-alike embroiled in shower scenes. Passing observations of multiple cultural approaches to wine and countryside will keep the tips of your lips angled northward. After all, how can you not like a character whose trusty hound is named after a major food group?
