I selected this book because it was free on Amazon, but it was actually good enough that I ended up buying the next two in the series. It's not a great work of classical literature, but as an escapist novel, it was highly enjoyable. The characters are believable, and the writing is enjoyable. While it is Christian, the religion feels appropriate to the characters and not preachy to the reader who is not of the same faith. I just grabbed this book when it was free because I just needed SOMETHING to read, and it really surprised me. The plot moved along briskly and the characters are genuinely interesting.Apparently, the backdrop for this story is taken from the author's own life, as his grandfather did move his family from Ohio and start an Amish community in Mexico just after the revolution there.I'm on the hook for the rest of the series!
I really loved this novel. So much better than some of the other Amish fiction out there.
