Oh man, this book is dark and twisted. I can see that some children might appreciate it, but it is definitely a picture book for older readers. Miyares' illustrations are flat out gorgeous. I loved the richness of the colours. I loved the integration of the text with the images. I loved that the pages became darker as the story progresses. I can imagine many rich conversations about how the author creates atmosphere and tension. I'd heard buzz about this one but was disappointed when I finally got my hands on it. I just don't get it. The bird is a jerk, yes. the minimal use of words to create a story does not shed much light on the big picture. yes it all comes together at the end, but the first 2/3's are lacking in my opinion. I think my preschooler friend would agree with me - that she loved the end but the start was just ???
