Passin' Through (1985) - Plot & Excerpts

"I'm anything it takes to..." "I do whatever will" get the coon" p34,55 from lofty age of 28 p271,2 "I don't know what the young folks are comin' to these days. All kinds of gallivantin' about. Restless, that's what they are, restless. They ought to have more chores to do." p317 when Burrows brothers "looked kind of beat up and shot up"http://www.louislamour.com/novels/pas...'Passin' Through' is the nickname Mrs Holyrood bestows on the stranger who stops by the ranch she inherited from admirer Mr Phillips in Denver. The narrator likes the alias, and stays to make repairs in return for the blue roan he had to ride out on quick when cut down from a noose by a Ute squaw and youth after he stopped in a small town bar for a meal. Shooting bully Burrows in self-defense brings down a mighty passel of trouble on the plain-speaking hard-living rider, culminating in six against one. Beautiful twentyish blonde Matty warns him away from the former actress with mighty few face lines under perfect grey hair, especially a last meal. A Pinkerton man seeks a thirtyish blonde who served an older gentleman a fine meal, his last ever. Mrs Holyrood wants to cook up a fine supper for her new hand. She directs him to the drawer of papers for the cattle tally, but he finds Phillips' will, bequeathing his half-share to niece Janet Le Caudy, who already owns the other half from her father. Janet is typical, pays no attention to the guy who is right p238, walks into trouble with smooth talking derringer-up-his-sleeve Charles Pelham Clinton. The style is rough-tootin' down-home, casual, pithy, active, slangy. One long gunfight against unending enemies. Discouraging when L'Amour heroes die. Does this one?(view spoiler)[ This one survives to marry Janet, but never gives his name, even to the "sky pilot". Unsolved answer may be in another Sackett. Matty's last name is Higgins. "Her face was without a line ... was somehow familiar ... her voice ... the way she walked" p112. (hide spoiler)]

This is one of my favorite novels. Nothing was as it seemed and I loved the way I as constantly trying to figure out what was going on. I highlighted a lot of passages in this book, mainly because the statements which were meant to reflect the mindset of men and women during this early time period carry over to those of us today. Again, my favorite line, a line that shows up often in his books is: "Besides, what does a name mean? Nothing, until a man makes it mean something." That's a truly profound line for me, especially considering how some people put so much stock into people today because of who they are related to. I could write a whole paper about this, but I'll just say, this was a great book.

What do You think about Passin' Through (1985)?

This has to be one of my favorite Louis L'Amour books. I just finished reading it for probably the tenth time and I couldn't get enough of it. All of Louis L'Amour's books are like this. They make you feel like you are actually living back in the old west. Passin' Through is one of those books that keeps you guessing on what is going to happen next. Makes you love certain characters and hate others. It is an amazing old western that will never get old to me. I honestly suggest anyone who loves westerns read any of L'Amour's books. They will never want to read another western after.

"There was a tall man at the bar, a man with a mustache and goatee, his black coat drawn back to reveal a pearl-handled gun. A mean man, a cruel man, a man looking for trouble, and here was I, a stranger."
This is one of ninety novels published by the prolific western writer. This western mystery follows the stranger named “Passin’ Through” who is on a mission to set things right. It’s a great selection to start with if you haven’t dug into his collection as of yet.
