Peace, Love, And Baby Ducks (2009) - Plot & Excerpts

Was a very good book in relation to describing the struggles in highschool concerning the aspect of physical attraction. The book shows the two sides, negative and positive, of being more developed as a woman. It is a great depiction of the way girls are treated by guys because of how they appear physically; especially in their bodies. This book definitely had it's cheesy parts but for the most part was enjoyable. My favorite section of this book was Peace. I could identify with both Carly and Anna and it had that end-of-summer feeling that was exactly what I needed after an incredibly harsh winter. The story felt more natural and I was really immersed--particularly the part where they had to dive backwards off a twelve-foot high board or they'd fail. God! By the Love section, when Cole made an appearance, it began to feel a bit forced. Who was this person and why did Carly like him? He didn't seem like her type, honestly and she seemed to fall for him a bit too fast. Neither Cole nor Roger seemed very likable, but Roger was the better of the two. By the end of the book, I couldn't stand Carly! Her protectiveness of her sister, understandable at the beginning, quickly became overkill. Almost everything she did annoyed me, the way she dressed and the expressions she used. She's trying to be "real", but somehow everything she did to achieve this seemed more fake than ever. In the Christmas delivery part, when she brings up the possibility that Jesus might have been black, I think the reader is supposed to agree with her, however to me it seemed that she was just generalizing non-white people. Wouldn't he have been Middle Eastern? I do feel like this book was written very freely and let you have your own opinion about the characters. Anna felt more like the "real" character to me--it seemed like she was trying to create less of an image for herself than Carly was. I saw the story more from Anna's point of view than Carly's. She was waiting for Carly to get with the program already, and so was I. The only time I didn't like Anna--and in general, couldn't identify with anyone anymore--was in Baby Ducks at the end. The part in which Anna a) hooks up with Cole and b) is found sleeping behind a port-a-potty was when I truly detached from the story. In general, this was a good read, so I gave it four stars.
