Performance In A Leading Role (2000) - Plot & Excerpts
I like the first 20-30% a lot – the nice scenes in the film shoot with some fine details about acting. But after that my interest slowly declined till I was about to stop reading. Sherlock Holmes is portraited too girly/emotional. Watson is more true to the original BBC-Watson. The book is way too long compared to the amount of content. It could benefit a lot from getting cut down to half the length by sharping up. This fic... the first 30ish% was good, and the scene where they say their goodbyes in Toronto was heart-wrenching, and I enjoyed the get together. But after that it seemed like the author favored rehashing the same conversation ("I love you," "No, I love YOU," teeth rot, etc) between John and Sherlock instead of writing scenes that would've been more interesting to see played out instead of summarized in a few lines of dialogue. The only strife in their relationship is the coming out issue, and that turns out to be hardly a speed bump with what's shown of it. The more than healthy dose of sex scenes throughout became repetitive and I started skimming them. And then, 40 pages til the end, suddenly Moriarty finally gets a bit of face time and THEN there's relationship angst? Haha, kidding, it only lasted for the last bit of the scene where he shows up. Zzz.I can't deny that part of me really liked how near-perfectly in love Sherlock and John were, but at 156k, I was honestly expecting either a.) for it to take longer for them to get together, or b.) some relationship conflict, maybe a temporary breakup. And at first I liked the news articles and interviews that were interspersed, but the 60 Minutes one just retold the entire fic and I found it unnecessary and boring. I am a little sad I just read the whole thing when I could've been... I don't know, vacuuming? If I'd rated the story based on the first 30%, it would've gotten five stars. Unfortunately, it just went on and on.
