Player One: What Is To Become Of Us (CBC Massey Lecture) (2010) - Plot & Excerpts
2.5 starsThis book was a little different for me because it had a touch of science fiction, which is my least favorite genre. I knew it wasn't heavy though, so I gave it a try. It reminded me a touch of The Breakfast Club -entire book takes place in a hotel lounge bar and surrounding area and is narrated by 4 people (one being a mysterious voiceover) with completely different personalities. That is mixed with The Left Behind series by Tim LaHaye -Is the end of the world here?. There are also some religious undertones. I think I would have enjoyed it more if I was able to connect one of the character's personalities. Plus, the ending was resolved too quickly and neatly for me. I really really really tried to like this book but I just couldn't finish it.The characters -- all of them -- irritated me in their own way. I really don't want to get into why and what irritated me with each character and all that, but seriously. To be fair, I've never been interested in "self reflective" books where the characters think about their lives; their problems; their issues; their whatever...etc. This book was recommended by my brother who enjoys these kinds of books. The premise of the book is what interested me and I was hoping it would have been more of a plot driven novel, but it's not. It's totally, 100%, completely a character driven novel -- the kind of novel I'd only force myself to read if it was required for a college course or something.I'm sure a lot of people like and even love this book, and many more will, but it was just not for me.
