Poison Fruit (2014) - Plot & Excerpts

It's a good thing that this book kept mentioning the Gilmore Girls, because that's what this series does remind me of: the cute small town, the frustrating locals, a bit of an overly dramatic love triangle. This kept most of that, with some sadness at it ending and various characters being removed from the playing board, but somehow managed to work a cataclysmic, potential-to-end-the-world battle that kind of worked in the setting. At the same time, lots of it was predictable paranormal romance, but Carey tweaked it to a conclusion (such a short series is refreshing). The love triangle was resolved, some thematic arcs that would have lasted a whole season on Buffy disposed of in a trice (see, this book acknowledges its major influences). MY only complaint is that it basically showed the last book's events radically altering the status quo of the world, and then almost no effects of it. Suing a town for not taking magical threats seriously seems like it'd be among the *least* of what should happen...Summing up, the series is very much Gilmore Girls meets early Buffy. This one just made me mad. Yes, there was some very good character development. Some of the backup stories that we've been waiting 3 books to get resolved, gets resolved. There's even a great, epic climactic battle. Daisy gets to be kick-ass on more than one occasion.But...but...but. It started with her being terrible, careless and incompetent. And even then, I'm getting ahead of myself. Things start off with Daisy and her closeted werewolf partner, Cody, investigating what seems like a pretty run of the mill case (from the point of view of the reader, not the people being terrorized by the supernatural person). While they're moving on that, there's some follow-up on the events of the last book -- namely a class action lawsuit against the local governments due to the pain and suffering that the bystanders and spectators weren't protected from. ...at this point, I just go into a spoiler-y rant, go check it out at my Irresponsible Reader blog if you want.I was initially disappointed to find out that this would be the end of this series, but now I'm absolutely okay with that.

What do You think about Poison Fruit (2014)?

I'm sad that this is the end. I still have questions left unanswered.
