I really enjoyed this, despite the fact that much of the main characters' actions are informed by their religion which is something I try to avoid in my fantasy reading.There is quite a bit of graphic description here in discussions of torture and many physical beatings of some of the main characters.I did really like the main characters and the story was pretty heartwrenching at times. Add in the ghosts and cats, secret passages and the theme of loyalty and familial love and I was hooked.Warning! This is not a complete story. This is very much the first part of the story and thank goodness the series is complete because otherwise it might be quite annoying that the story just stops at the end of the book with nothing resolved.I will definitely be listening to the next part immediately. Kate Rudd did a fabulous job performing this for Brilliance Audio. The Moorhawke trilogy is wonderfully realised and populated with interesting characters that we come to care about. The main character, Wynter, is the daughter of the King's closest friend and advisor. They have been abroad for five years on a diplomatic mission and return to find the kingdom much changed. Darkness has crept into the court, all mention of the king's son is forbidden and he seems to be in rebellion against his father. Much of the interest is in the relationship between Wynter and the king's other son who really wants to be left alone to become a doctor but is now reluctantly the heir, and his companion, Christopher. Christopher is a crippled musician of uncertain background but he is soon her trusted friend as the three of them become closely involved in efforts to find out what is wrong with the king, and therefore the kingdom. It is a world you can sink into and escape.
