Pontius Pilate (2014) - Plot & Excerpts

I rather enjoyed this book as it offered a unique perspective on the geography, politics, religious, and cultural climate that surrounded the death and resurrection of our Savior. I appreciated some of the tangential, extra-biblical developments. I especially enjoyed the stories surrounding Malchus, the temple guard whose ear was cut off by Peter in the garden of Gethsemane. I had never considered how he would have personally responded to this “fraud,” Jesus performing an actual miracle on him. In the end, I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is hoping to get a better feel for the texture of the 2nd temple era. I find that history comes to life when it is presented in story form. I loved this book! It was not only as historically accurate as historical fiction can get, it is very well written and kept me engaged from beginning to end. It was very difficult to put down during the second half of the book. I was never very much into Roman politics, but I found the author's inclusion necessary and fascinating. Pilate became quite a complex character, as Maier explores the protagonists struggle between balancing his political goals and his internal ethics. The author very adroitly weaves Biblical events and personages into the story.
