Depois voltamos ao passado e conhecemos o jovem Moritz-Maria e seu amigo (e atleta??) Unterholzer. Porque ele desistiu de ser especialista em língua irlandesa (pornográfica?) antiga. Porque uma hoteleira italiana da toscana abomina hóspedes alemães. Qual a relevância de seu grande livro Verbos Irregulares Portugueses para o mundo? Igelfeld vai a India e conhece um homem sagrado. Como terminará uma dor de dente e ele descobre uma utilidade para seu livro. Продължавам да се учудвам защо авторите на филми и книги твърдоглаво пропускат да включат един малък материал в края на книгата или на сайта си, обясняващ причините и мотивацията за имената на героите. Все пак имената много често са подбирани съвсем целенасочено, именно за да бъдат дамга на героя и неговите основни цели/качества/съдба. Красноречиви примери са: „Герои“ и „Игрите на глада 1, 2“
What do You think about Portuguese Irregular Verbs (2006)?
A fun and simple read that reminds us how ridiculous it is to be human sometimes. Though most of Dr. von Igelfeld's thoughts are not to be taken seriously, I loved this particular paragraph about the evolution of language: "The crudities of the modern world were simplifying or even destroying linguistic subtleties...Where previously there might have been four adjectives to describe a favoured hill, or the scent of new-mown hay, or the action of threading the warp of a loom, now there would only be one, or none. And as we lost the words, von Igelfeld thought, we lost the texture of the world that went with them."

For me this book falls into an ever-increasing cache of books that I (technically) enjoyed but would have a real difficult time recommending them to anyone.It's kind of like golf: It's incredibly slow and there are a lot of features that you'll miss if you're not paying close attention for them. But that's what golf is. It's not designed to blow your socks off with monster-truck-smashing action (SUNDAY! SUNDAY! SUNDAY!); it's intended to appeal to its niche audience.I have yet to read anything by Wodehouse so I can't compare. But if you enjoy Eddie Izzard more than Dane Cook, Fraiser more than That 70's Show, and curling more than basketball I could recommend this book to you. I really liked it but I'll have to cater to the portions of my psyche that like Vonnegut and Orwell before I'll be able to read something else by McCall Smith.

Although supposedly a novel, it's really a bunch of loosely strung together short stories. This was nothing like Lady's Own Detective Agency, which is delightful. The humor in the book was just too subtle for me. There were a few funny parts but mostly it just seemed like a dork of a guy whose life has very little strife, making tiny things into huge things. It did feel very German, though, which was good.I also found it really irritating when characters said something in another language but it wasn't translated. OK, I agree we American's are sorely under-educated when it comes to language but requiring the knowledge of French in order to understand the punchline of a story written in English is unfair. Since I listened to this on tape, I can't even look it up in an online translator to get the gist. (Anyone want to tell me what the woman said in French at the end of the book?) The narrator was good, though, his accents decent and pronunciation of German names sounded good to my American ears.
