Her long black hair spilled around her shoulders, blending into her dark satin robe, and her violet eyes greeted him with a tender warmth that only served to pull a sigh from his lips. Her slender fingers toyed with a red mug filled with coffee, and there was another cup on the round white plastic table top opposite her. He shoved his damp hair out of his face and slumped into the chair in front of the mug she had evidently poured for him. He lifted the hideously decorated white cup to his lips, ignoring the spritely unicorn on it. She had chosen it on purpose, secretly amusing herself with how he would react to being given such a childish, feminine drinking vessel. He wasn’t going to give her the pleasure of seeing the reaction she had envisioned. He wasn’t in the mood. “What is wrong, Brother?” Iolanthe set her red mug down and her face filled with tenderness and concern that warmed him, lifting his mood and chasing away the black storm clouds, leaving him on the verge of sighing into his coffee like some damned female as he contemplated an answer to her question.
