Posy. Linda Newbery, Catherine Rayner (2009) - Plot & Excerpts
A cat’s life can be as simple or as complex as one makes it. This book is about all of the character traits of Posy, a wiry, striped kitten who plays and licks and scratches and snores. Every page captures Posy doing something new from hissing and purring to cuddling and wrecking board-games. The illustrations bring Posy to life with a variety of mediums, such as ink, crayon, and charcoal. The scratchy ink lines give Posy all of the spunky character a kitten can possess. The text is wonderfully written and placed, and it creates a nice rhythm as the character traits on one page rhyme with the ones on the next, making it perfect for reading aloud. The words are printed largely in brown ink, and the focus is clear without being too busy or distracting. The simplicity of the words describes the complexity of the cat very well. I am not in any way, shape or form a cat lover. Matter of fact, I probably borderline on severe cat dislover...but the clever word play and illustrations saved this book. It is worth reading the book for those 2 things...and the cat is almost adorable...not adorable like I want to bring it home and touch it but adorable in the sense that I could appreciate it from a distance.I'll stop now. Read the book.
