Power Thoughts: 12 Strategies To Win The Battle Of The Mind (2010) - Plot & Excerpts
I'm a huge Joyce Meyer fan because she is practical in her Biblical life applications. This was a wonderful book! A reminder that we do indeed have power (supernaturally) through Scriptural truths if we just apply them. Postive thinking can only go so far...but when combined with promises throughout the Bible...well get ready for your blessing! I thoroughly enjoyed this book and will read it again and again. Being a student of the topic of the "positive thinking" genre, I can't say that Joyce Meyer brings much new to the table in her initial chapters. If a reader doesn't understand the merits of positive thinking to improve their life and chances of succeeding - I would encourage them to look to other texts. However, the author hits her stride when she speaks about why a person has good cause to think positive with the context of her suggestions using Biblical teachings. I would classify this book more under "religious attitude" rather than "the power of thoughts," personally.Meyers is inconsistent at times, with her suggestion of having an "I can do anything attitude," but then gives many valid reasons why this may not be the case. It is written that "with God all things are possible." But the operative words here are "with GOD." If our thoughts (and actions) are not in harmony with God's will, success is not guaranteed. It is refreshing that the author demonstrates that she understands, and cautions against, the oft misused quotations such as "ask and it shall be given" - which is "wish fulfillment." God would have us develop as mature souls, not be a Santa Clause to us. Meyers makes the point that if we don't get what we want, right now, what God has in mind for us is much better - later. It's a small point, but her implications that specific other religions (Buddhism) are inferior in teachings and practice regarding the power of the mind were distasteful. She would do well to do her homework that some very good Eastern teachings well predate her references. Other traditions speak well of truth - not just popular Evangelism. Be that as it may... Her point is to use Christian teachings to help ourselves, with the understanding that God loves us, wants what's best for us - and is not punishing us for every little misstep to discouragement. I'd like to take the authors inconsistencies as trying to give a balanced perspective. But perhaps best described in 1 Corinthians, Chapter 9: 24 Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. 25 Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. 26 Therefore I do not run like someone running aimlessly; In this book, Joyce makes for a good trainer as well as cheerleader - but, we must do the work to train and discipline our minds.
