Prada Et Préjugés (2011) - Plot & Excerpts

You know when you're at that point where you're JUST about to fall asleep, but not quite there yet? This is what I felt whilst reading this book.It has a brilliant and exciting storyline and a brilliant premise, but unfortunately it failed to live up to it. I'm honestly trying to understand how it has so many high ratings. Did we read the same book?Callie Montgomery is your typical 15/16 year old that nobody really likes or wants to be around. Then, whilst on a trip to London, she decides to woo the attention of The Popular Crowd by buying a pair of red Prada heels. Alas, just her luck! For she falls, bumps her head and wakes up in England... in 1815.I tried very hard to like this book, and was so excited when I finally managed to get a copy. Unfortunately, it was flat, badly written (as in: "and then we did this and then he said that and omg everyone is so weird, then we had dinner and I went to bed") and boring. I couldn't connect with any of the characters and Callie was, frankly, really bloody annoying. Incredibly disappointed. 2 out of 5 stars. This book sounded promising: a girl traveling back to 1815 to find her own Mr. Darcy. Who wouldn't want to find their very own Mr. Darcy? But after finishing the first chapter, I decided that this book was not for me. Callie, our heroine, is about 14-15 years old. The school she goes to is typical, containing its share of popular Valley Girl stereotypes and geeks. She and her classmates are on a school trip to London, and they're staying at a snazzy 5-star hotel. Callie's best friend had recently moved away and now she's left to fend for herself at school. Unfortunately for her, for the duration of this trip, she is paired up with Angela, one of the popular rich snob. (They use a buddy system for this trip; no one goes out alone, etc.) But, unsurprisingly, Callie gets left behind in the hotel while Angela hangs out with her "minions".Callie says that she and her best friend used to poke fun at the popular girls. So, I inferred that she wouldn't want anything to do with them. But what did she do immediately after she said that? She went out and bought more than half a grand's worth of clothes to impress the "A-listers" so that they will let her sneak out with them to a night club. Seriously? A fourteen-year-old, who's just barely gotten her mother's permission to go on a school trip to London, would risk everything to go to a night club? Without even a second thought of "oh this might be a bad idea". And then of course, she trips in her Prada heels and ends up in 1815. I stopped reading after the first chapter because Callie annoyed me so much within so little time. She's sooo immature, and there's nothing redeeming about her. It's impossible to believe that she's the one who's going to find Mr. Darcy.Interesting side note: I borrowed the book from the public library and it looked almost brand new. No creases at all in the spine and the edges are only slightly worn out. This book was published in 2009 and I'm assuming that the library got it in around that time too (it's a huge city library that updates its collection constantly). Before I started the book, I thought it strange that such a fun-sounding book could be so unworn, unread. NOW I understand. There were probably plenty of other people like me, who read the first few pages and returned it.

What do You think about Prada Et Préjugés (2011)?

This was a light book I finished within an hour to an hour and a half. It was great and entertaining to pass the time while I sat in the library with my crutches and sprained ankle while the rest of my year went to an excursion. It also helps that I am a fan of adaptions of 'Pride and Prejudice.'It uses the basis of the classic 'Pride and Prejudice' for the protagonists' relationship as well as other characters but with twists. The names are definitely changed and the 'Elizabeth Bennett' is from modern times. It isn't a historical novel but a young adult adventure and romance novel that clashes modern books with classics. The book was great and very much entertaining. I absolutely loved it and would definitely buy it when the occasion comes to read when I have an hour or two to kill. I suggest if you have an hour or two to kill to go ahead and read it. It is definitely worth it especially in that amount of time. Very amusing.

Maybe one of my least favorite Pride and Prejudice retellings. I was actually really disappointed.
