Prairie Song (2013) - Plot & Excerpts

A delightfull read. This is the first of Mona's books that I have read. The novel is very well structured and contains wonderful prose as well as much food for thought that will inspire you to look within yourself on occassion. The story is about a small wagon train on its way to California containing a few hardy, good looking trail hands and a number of young beautiful girls. Love is always in the air and makes for interesting reading. Historically, the difficulties that were encountered on the westward trail through all kinds of weather will make you question whether or not you would have tried to make the trip yourself. It was a long long walk at the rate of about 15 miles a day. You carried all of your belongings with you, cooked your own meals, had to put up with your fellow travelers whether you liked them or not, had to be on the lookout for unfriendly Indians or road robbers, bears, snakes and cross dangerous streams and rivers and traverse the hot deserts and snow capped mountains. Wow!! Reviewed by Bobbie Grob for Readers' FavoritesAfter the Civil War ends, no one is the same. Families have been torn apart, loved ones are lost or dead, and everyone has to find a way to pick up the pieces of their former lives and keep moving forward. Anna Goben has lost her beloved brother to a far-off battleground, and now she, her mother, and her grandfather are joining a wagon train to head out west and start a new life. Prairie Song: Hearts Seeking Home, Book 1 by Mona Hodgson begins just days before the wagon train departs on a five-month journey. Anna knows she has to be strong for her family and lead them away from their despair, but there is not much time to contemplate her own needs and wants. As the wagon train rolls on, there are several other families to get to know as well. Ms. Hodgson has a real talent at creative believable characters. Prairie Song: Hearts Seeking Home, Book 1 by Mona Hodgson is a lovely Christian romance. As it is set in the late 1800’s the characters are already more chaste and reserved than the youth of today, so there is no bodice-ripping or premarital sex involved. The Christian theme has not been done with a heavy hand, either, so I did not feel as though I was being preached to as I read. Instead there were just quiet assurances of God’s love and grace sprinkled throughout the book. I thought the whole book was beautifully written, but I really appreciated not being inundated with Bible verses on every page. I will definitely be looking for the next book in the series!
