Ale vražda otce Joyce, jemuž ve zpovědnici galwayského kostela kdosi usekl hlavu, otřese i těmi nejotrlejšími Iry. Jack Taylor sám sebe vždy považoval za beznadějný případ. Navíc se ještě ani zdaleka neoklepal z nedávného těžkého traumatu. Ale nabídka nové práce mu dává šanci začít znovu. Zároveň mu zcela nečekaně svitne naděje na vyplnění jednoho dosud marného snu – získání rodiny. Tajuplná směsice exorcismu, neodbytného pronásledování a nečekaného okouzlení ho vláká do vražedné pavučiny temných spiknutí. A na každém kroku ho provází přízrak mrtvého dítěte. Výbušně, znepokojivě a skrnaskrz originálně zachycuje Ken Bruen tísnivou atmosféru v irské společnosti v čase velkých sociálních a ekonomických otřesů. Bruen nám podává další důkaz svého nezpochybnitelného literárního nadání.Děj - Počátek je spíš postoj a zkoumání lidských duší a chování. O spiknutí se dá mluvit zatím jen velmi okrajově. Postupem se příběh skutečně proplétá do pavučiny. Jsou zde zadní vrátka, Tajné styky, a komplic je i ten nej nepravděpodobnější člověk. Postupně se odhalují temné zákoutí církve, jejich počiny i skrývání hnusu. Je to takový detektivní příběh, kde hraje velkou roli tajemství. O tom, jak činy jednoho prasete, ticho svědka, a zkažený život může vést v nejednu tragédii. Kam až je člověk schopen zajít pro svou spravedlnost? A co všechno je vyšší moc ochotna udělat pro její ukrytí?Postavy- Jack –bývalý gardista, alkoholik. Pronásleduje ho neštěstí způsobené nepozorností…. Vystupuje jako nevýrazný hrdina. Je zamlklý a neustále přemýšlí, avšak až moc často nahlas řekne něco zcela jiného. Jako člověk je spíš troska hrabající se z bláta. A to občas velmi šikovně. Avšak stále bojuje se silnou touhou se napít, kvůli čemukoliv, až bych řekla, kvůli všemu…. Ridge- gardistka, tvrdá ženská, která se s nikým nemazlí, ví, že život je tvrdý. Je mi sympatická. Avšak i velmi silnou ženu dokáže něco, někdo položit na lopatky, pokud ví jak… Cody – mladý muž, který je nadšeným „fanouškem“ Jacka. Ač je střelený a opojný mládím Jacka si nakonec pomalu, ale jistě získává na svou stranu. Poslušně plní veškeré zadané úkoly. A kupodivu přes svůj mladý věk je svým odhodláním bravurně plní. Zhodnocení – Knihu, jsem vzala v knihovně s chutí na něco „Krvavého“. Dostala jsem však pohled do intrik a falše. Není úplně ztracená, ale ani neuchvátila. Obálka i název nesla příslib větší. Určitě se dá doporučit jako zajímavost. Ne však jako strhující. Hodnocení je 6/10.Autor - Ken Bruen se narodil v r. 1951 v irském městě Galway. Studoval na Trinity College v Dublinu, promoval v oboru metafyzika. Procestoval řadu zemí – Afriku, Japonsko, Spojené státy, jihovýchodní Asii a Jižní Ameriku, a živil se přitom jako učitel angličtiny. Dnes žije v Galway se svou ženou a dcerou a je spisovatelem na plný úvazek.Ken Bruen je považován za talentovaného autora detektivní literatury spíše amerického stylu, střiženého černým irským humorem. „Gardy“ je první ze série šesti detektivek, jejímž hlavním pilířem je bývalý policista Jack Taylor, působící v Galway jako soukromé očko. Jak tento literární hrdina, tak Ken Bruen, autor několika dalších detektivních sérií, se dnes těší velké čtenářské oblibě.

What more can Jack Taylor possibly go through? I think enough is enough and then Ken Bruen wallops off another great story and Jack Taylor is once again blindsided by the dark side of life."Priest" is the 5th book in Bruen's series featuring ex-guard Jack Taylor. The subject for this book is not a new one but Bruen handles it in a way that is unique yet very true to his own writing style. As I'm sure I've mentioned with each book that I've read in this series, I love the way Bruen writes. Hard-core, cut to the chase writing that leaves me raw. I will be very very very sad when I reach the end of this series. I will be in mourning.

PRIEST (Private Investigator-Ireland-Cont) – ExBruen, Ken – 5th in seriesScorpion Press, 2006- UK HardcoverJack Taylor is out of the madhouse, sober and trying to give up smoking. A young man wants to be Jack’s partner as private investigators and the son Jack never had. Jack is also the guilt over the death of his friends’ daughter and its result on them. Jack’s one friend from the Guarda is being stalked, and a priest, with a history of pedophilia, has been found decapitated in his confessional.*** Bruen is a brilliant writer. Priest is dark, profane, disturbing, haunting and yet I don’t consider it noir as it is somehow hopeful. Perhaps it’s just that somehow, through it all, Jack survives both physically and emotionally. Present day Ireland, both good and bad, comes to life with an awareness of the past, the hold of the Church and it’s striding into the future. The description of the impact of pedophilia on its victims is powerful. Bruen’s style is spare and sharp; it resonates and stays with you long after you’ve finished the book. The story is compelling and the ending, as with each of the books in the series, is like a punch in the stomach, but immediately makes me want the next book. “Priest” and Ken Bruen are not for everyone, but I found this to be excellent.

Apparently part of a series, I picked up this gritty, Irish noir because I liked the blurbs on the back. I think I'm going to have to amend my "types of mysteries I like" list to include noir.If you're keeping track, the list is now: 1) Agatha Christie, and other female British authors2) NoirWe meet our detective, Jack Taylor, just as he's getting out of an asylum where he spent some time after a child he was minding fell out of a window to her death. Now staying away from alcohol, he bounces around Galway meeting old friends and old enemies while looking into the beheading of a priest known to have molested children. Aside from the local color, Taylor spends a lot of time making social commentary in his head, about the changing role of the church, the financial boom in Ireland, and how pesky American culture seems to be invading. Very readable, but be prepared for a few hundred f-bombs.
