I was suprised by how much I liked this.I enjoyed both Isabelle's and Mariata's story and feel that Jane Johnson balanced the stories really well. You don't get bored with either of them cause she stops the story of one person when it becomes really interesting and continues with the other person and leaves you wanting more.I couldn't at all predict how it was going to end.Overall, two thumbs up from me :)! I liked it, but I didn't love it. The book is well written and extremely well researched, giving a fascinating glimpse into the culture and history of the Tuareg people. I must admit I enjoyed the flash-back sections of the book more than the modern day passages.Whilst the main bulk of the book is realistic and quite brutal at times, the ending felt contrived and out of kilter with the rest of the story. It left me with a rather flat, dissatisfied feeling as if there should have been a more dramatic conclusion. There were also several loose ends which never got tied up and I found that a bit sloppy in comparison with the rest of the book.
Really liked it, wasn't prepared for the ending. Made me want to look up more by Jane Johnson.

Took a bit for me to get into the book, but once I did I really enjoyed it.
