Quand Le Destin S'en Mêle (2013) - Plot & Excerpts
What a wonderful surprise. I really went into this one on a whim... Not sure how I'd feel? I loved it! I'm shocked but I loved it ;)There was such a heart wrenching and heart warming story in this book. I felt so connected to the Heroine (Charlie) that I hurt deeply for all the suffering in her life. I found myself cheering for her and desperately wanting her HEA. Rhys our Hero was seriously sexy and I loved him and how he redeemed himself from his initial pregnancy shock. This was a great read that kept me engaged and turning pages. I laughed and I cried throughout this fantastic contemporary romance. Another delightful book from one of my favorite contemporary romance novelists, Sarah Mayberry. What made this book stand out for me is that almost every aspect of the plot and the way the heroine thinks, feels, and acts felt so real. Many readers (at least the single female ones) could read this book and repeatedly tell themselves, “Yep, I could see doing something like that. Yep, that’s how I’d react.” The book begins with our heroine, Charlie, going out for a night on the town with a close girl friend to celebrate getting out of the military. Although she’s got a lot of quiet confidence in her abilities, she doesn’t think of herself as the type men in bars would even notice. Her friend Gina dresses her up, and boy do the men notice. Charlie trips and spills wine on a gorgeous man. She turns down his offer for a drink, but later seeks him out at the end of the night. They end up going home together, but Charlie leaves before she wakes up because she fears once his beer goggles wear off, he’lll find her hideous. But two months later, Charlie finds out the condom failed. And, the rest of the story begins. Charlie wants to keep the baby, and Rhys (our hero) wants to help her raise it. In fact, he’s like to give a romance a try. But Charlie’s combination of pride and lack-of-self esteem won’t let that happen. She doesn’t want to be anyone’s consolation prize. As the book unfolds, she learns more about herself, how her relationship with her father shaped her attitudes toward men, and ultimately how her father loved her. Only then, does she realize she is a loveable gorgeous woman. The development and the plot unfolds nicely. (Some may complain her self-esteem re: her looks is too low, but I found it to be realistic) Perhaps the only downside is that Rhys is somewhat underdeveloped. He starts out a successful, rich guy and ends much the same. He tries so hard to win Charlie over, and when he finally thinks he’s failed only then does he try dating another woman (but fails miserably). Perhaps we could have gotten to know him better or see him grow a little more, but that would have made the book much longer. This book is about Charlie and I like it that way. Rated on my five star romance scale
