Questionable Content, Vol. 1 (2010) - Plot & Excerpts

I used to follow QC online and somehow got out of the habit. Reading this makes me wonder why I stopped. All the strips were ones I'd read before and, while the author makes some disparaging comments about the development of his style, I really love the entire story. I'm not an indie music buff so some of the jokes make little sense to me but overall I find that to be a fault in myself not the comic. This book collects the first 299 strips of the webcomic Questionable Content.Questionable Content is the story of a twenty-something indie music fan, the quirky friends that surround him, and his pet psychotic robot. The plot varies from slice of life comedy to more serious drama (usually still with comedy). Far more entertaining than I'm making it sound, QC is one of the best webcomics I've read, and the comics themselves are easy 5-star material. Head over to the website and read them now.The artist is continually refining and improving his style, so the quality in the earliest strips might seem poor compared to what it will become. This volume sets the stage, so to speak, and firmly establishes Martin, Faye and Dora as our main characters. At the end of this volume things are starting to move towards the large plotlines that will emerge in the comic.Rating the collection itself was very difficult. The comics are four vertical panels, and shrinking them to the size needed for printing really takes some of the impact and details out of the art. It also makes the text extremely small. Readable, but not comfortably so. But the production value keeps this collection worthwhile despite the above. The paper and printing quality are very high, and the author has added small comments below every strip and there are some sketches here and there. This is worth getting, both to flip through your favorites and to support the comic, but it really is much better to read the material online first, which is sort of a shame to have to say when reviewing a printed collection.
